Whether you’ve been a member of a book club for a while now, or you’re looking to start your own, there are many ways to make a book club gathering unique.

Choose a great book: If you still need to decide on a book, take a trip to your local library and get suggestions from the librarian. They’re often the best resources for book clubs and can even provide excellent meeting ideas. Who knows, thanks to a librarian, your group could end up outside, having a picnic on inexpensive table linens, discussing a great read! Libraries, too, are a great place for readers, because you can stumble upon great books by just walking up and down the aisles.

Pick a theme: If you’re hosting the book club meeting at your house, be sure to match the décor of the discussion area to the theme of the book. Perhaps the book you’re reading takes place in France; you may want to match inexpensive table linens or dessert plates to the color of the French flag. Or, you can deck out the book discussion chairs with colorful dining chair covers that match the genre or theme.

Provide snacks and refreshments: If possible, provide food that matches the type of cuisine that the characters in your chosen book eat. For example, if you’re reading “Eat, pray, love,” by Elizabeth Gilbert, set out gelato and other tasty treats that the main character eats throughout her journey. Finger food typically works the best for book club meetings. Maybe you want to be informal and set out food in your discussion space, or perhaps you want to designate spots at a table, covered with inexpensive table linens, by setting out dessert plates and a cloth napkin for everyone. Whatever you choose, be sure the yummy fare somehow ties back to the book.

Create an activity: According to your book, plan an activity that all your book club members can participate in. For example, if the protagonist frequently references a vintage tapestry painting that hangs in his or her apartment, buy a cloth napkin for each book club member and have them paint their own tapestry around a table with dining chair covers to catch any paint spills. Or, maybe the characters in the book you’re discussing played some sort of game; have everyone in your book club play the same game together! Whichever activity you choose, simply make it easy, but fun for all!

Feel free to get creative when you’re planning your next book club. Discussing books is fun, but when there’s food, activities, and more, a book club can be an excellent reprieve from real life.
